How do I know this operation is going to work?
As previously stated, the Gastric Bypass has been successfully performed since
1969 and complication rates are acceptably low relative to benefits gained by
weight loss. However, the Gastric Bypass is not a cure for obesity, rather it is a
tool to lose weight. Success requires change in eating patterns. If high calorie
beverages are consumed (which the Gastric Bypass is not designed to restrict),
you will not lose weight. We are a conservative surgical group and follow the
recommendations of a special U.S. Government task force on obesity. Surgery is
performed only on those who have a high likelihood of benefiting from the weight
loss associated with the operation. Our patients, by following our directions,
have usually lost at least 50 pounds in the first 2 to 3 months after surgery and
about 100 pounds within 12 months.
